Bystanders have filmed the moment an elderly supermarket worker bravely confronts a woman allegedly stealing a trolley full of groceries.

The chaotic footage recently shared to TikTok shows a female staff member at the Riverton Coles, in Perth‘s southern suburbs, scuffling with another woman.

The shopper pulls off her own sweater so she can get free from the worker and drops her handbag in the process.

The barefoot woman then runs over to the packed-to-the-brim trolley and tries to push another elderly staff member away as she attempts to retrieve the items.

The clip shows a crowd of onlookers have gathered outside the supermarket as the woman then grabs one large box from the trolley and leaves in the direction of the carpark, leaving the rest of the items behind.

Many commenters on the clip said they would not have intervened.

‘I used to go above and beyond for my work until I got hurt and then work did the bare minimum in support. Now I would never put myself at risk like this,’ one commenter said.

‘That’s what you’re supposed to do. Coles doesn’t want you to intervene in case they are liable for any injuries you suffer,’ another said.

‘Good work to the staff,’ added a third.

Other commenters said the woman wouldn’t be allegedly stealing groceries unless she was really in need.

‘Just let her go, Coles is probably insured or budgets for this kind of thing,’ one person said.

‘With the constant increase in the cost of living expect this to become more and more frequent,’ added another.

Coles has been contacted for comment.
