An Australian mum has issued a warning to other parents after her toddler was left with a 1cm gash in her mouth from using a toothbrush.

The Sunshine Coast mum shared the situation to parenting group Tiny Hearts Education and said her ‘daredevil’ daughter was left with a ‘hole’ at the back of her mouth after a freak accident.

‘My daughter the daredevil launched herself off the couch onto our playmat, as she does, it’s low to the ground. Only this time with a toothbrush in her mouth,’ the mum told Tiny Hearts, and images were shared online on Thursday.

The child was quickly picked up by her dad and had ‘blood pouring into her mouth’, and the mum admitted it was a ‘bad’ decision for the family to brush their teeth in the living room.

‘I cradled her into the recovery position over the kitchen sink and got dad to ring 000,’ she said.

‘We had no idea where the bleeding was coming from but I knew she was alert and that I needed to protect her air way.’

After arriving at the hospital via an ambulance the 1cm gash was found at the ‘back of her mouth near her throat’.

‘She had to go through surgery and was poked for hours trying to find a vein for a cannula. That was the hardest part of the experience!’ the mum continued.

Thankfully she knew exactly what to do and ‘acted quickly and correctly’ because she had completed a Tiny Hearts Education parenting course prior.

On Facebook the parenting group reminded all parents to be ‘extra careful’ when their little ones are using toothbrushes and to ensure they don’t run around with one in their mouth.

‘A big shout out and well done to these amazing parents who, despite a very scary situation, remained calm and acted to protect their child,’ the page wrote.

‘They knew how to support their little one into the recovery position and knew how to keep her airway protected. Now that’s what I call an empowered parent.’
