Heated debate has erupted amongst Aussies after a controversial podcast question raised a divisive issue: Which is the correct way to store your mugs in the cupboard?
Dubbed ‘cup gate’, the contentious question was raised by Ryan Jon on the ‘normal or nah’ segment of his and Toni Lodges’ podcast Toni & Ryan.
The pair both believe it’s bizarre to store cups the ‘right way up’ and argue they should always be stored upside down to prevent spiders and insects from falling in, however thousands of people have weighed in and many completely disagree.

Aussies are embroiled in a heated debate regarding the right way to store a mug. Should it be stored the right way up (left) or upside down? (right)
The controversial question was raised by Ryan Jon (left) on the Toni & Ryan podcast
‘Normal or nah – putting a cup in the cupboard the right way up that you drink it,’ Ryan asked on the segment.
‘Nah, I’d do it upside down,’ Toni immediately responded.
‘Otherwise you could get a witch or a spider or something in there,’ she said.
Ryan agreed that the ‘normal’ way to store it is upright, and added that dust could fall in otherwise, which Toni agreed was ‘probably more likely than a witch’.
‘Can you believe some freaks put cups in the cupboard “the right way up” he said when he uploaded the segment to TikTok.
Millions of people have tuned in to the debate, and thousands have commented sharing their very strong opposing opinions.
‘You store plates upside down as well then?’ one man asked.
‘The rims usually bigger than the base leaving less space in cupboard and more likely to hit other glasses,’ a woman said.
‘I hope the cupboard is very clean. The rim touches it when upside down,’ another wrote.
‘Upside down grosses me out. The rim to shelf contact. Ew,’ another said.
Both podcast hosts (pictured) believe that mugs should be stored upright, but thousands of people that commented on the discussion were split in opinion
Storing the mug upright seems to be unique to Australia, and other countries with dangerous insects as many people from European countries say they would never consider storing mugs upside down.
‘Tell me you live in Australia without telling me,’ one man commented.
‘Right way up because I live in a country where nature’s monsters don’t crawl around my house,’ another joked.
‘Didn’t know so many people stored their mugs top up, I always store them upside down cause dust in my mugs be ruining my drink,’ one man disagreed.
‘It took a single dead spider to ensure I never store cups right side up,’ another said.
One woman said ‘it doesn’t even matter’ because she will wash her mug before she uses it anyway.
