A tradie has crash tackled a thief trying to escape with a bottle of rum at a local shopping centre.

Security guards inside Booval Fair, a shopping centre near Ipswich in Queensland, were grappling with two teenagers police say were on a shoplifting spree.

Footage shows one teen screaming ‘I can’t breathe’ and ‘I’m gonna bash ya’ while she’s being detained.

Police said the two teenagers pinched a bottle of Bundaberg rum from a bottle shop before being stopped by security as onlookers watched on.

A short time later a third girl arrives, spotting the stolen rum bottle being put down by the security guard on a nearby trolley. 

She quickly scopes out the area, grabs the booze and makes a run for it.

But she didn’t make it far, crash tackled by a local man dubbed the ‘hi-vis hero’.

Brent Arch who captured the incident told 9News, ‘The third girl got dropped.. she tried to take the rum and run so we know where her priorities were.’

He added that it was a solid hit by the vigilante. 

‘It looked like he used to play or something.’

Two teenagers aged 15 and 17, were charged over the incident and denied bail to face Ipswich Children's Court

Two teenagers aged 15 and 17, were charged over the incident and will face Ipswich Children’s Court. 

The 15-year-old girl was charged with two counts of stealing and the 17-year-old girl was charged with the serious assault of a security guard over 60, threatening violence, and stealing.

They were both denied bail and will appear in court at a later date.
