Two people have been killed after their car ploughed into a tree in Sydney’s south west on Sunday.  

Emergency services were called to Henry Lawson Drive near the Hume Highway in Lansdowne at 11pm. 

Police have not revealed any information about the male driver or male passenger as they have not been formally identified.

Authorities were called to the scene after witnesses described a Volkswagen Golf slamming into a tree. 

The two people inside the vehicle could not be saved.

The crash closed Henry Lawson Drive in both directions for seven hours. 

The busy thoroughfare between the Hume Highway and Milperra Road was re-opened at 6am on Monday. 

Forensic officers from Bankstown Police are investigating the cause of the single-vehicle crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.

They have asked for anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to contact Bankstown Police station.
