A dozen people have been rushed to hospital after a serious crash between a mini-bus and a car on a busy Queensland highway.

Multiple ambulance crews were called to the Smithfield Bypass in Smithfield, Cairns at about 10.40am on Wednesday.

Twelve people were triaged by paramedics with several suffering serious injuries.
