Two people have been rescued after falling into a giant tank of chocolate at the Mars factory in Pennsylvania

In an incident which could easily have been ripped from the pages of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the pair fell waist high into an enormous vat of chocolate and were unable to climb out without assistance.

The two who fell into the tank were factory workers and were not injured, but the Elizabethtown Fire Department had to be called in order to pull them out.

Lancaster County dispatch explained how the two ended up in the tank just before 2pm on Thursday afternoon.

More than two dozen emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters were on scene for around an hour before the two individuals, who were ‘not floating around in the chocolate’ were rescued and taken to hospital.

A hole had to be cut into the tank to free the people. Both were taken to a local hospital by helicopter reports PennLive.

‘We can confirm both people have been taken offsite for further evaluation. We’re extremely grateful for the quick work of first responders,’ a statement from Mars read.

The plant, located 12 miles from Hershey, Pennsylvania, is known for making a variety of products, including M&Ms and Dove chocolate.
