Vernon Kay treats a little girl with brain cancer to a private putting session as he takes part in charity golf session

Vernon Kay displayed his paternal side as he helped teach a little girl with cancer how to play golf while taking part in a charity game.

The presenter, 48, took to the world famous golf course at The Grove in Watford on Tuesday to compete in a tournament hosted by the charity Children with Cancer.

After taking on professional golfers for the tournament, Vernon then met with Dottie, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, for a private putting session.

The father-of-two said of his day: ‘I’m so happy to be here to support Children with Cancer UK, and meeting Dottie.

‘Her story is heartbreaking, but it’s amazing to see how happy she is and how she’s not letting her brain tumour stop her. She really is such an inspiration.’

Vernon was accompanied by other stars such as retired jockey Tony ‘AP’ McCoy, footballer Jeff Schlupp, former Love Island winner Nathan Massey, former England player David Bentley and broadcaster Lee Dixon, all enjoying their time on the course with their respective teams.

The day was made up an 18 hole round of golf, filled with surprises along the way such as a pizza truck, a champagne fire truck, and a ‘beat the pro’ competition.

Vernon led the charge and started the day half way through the golf course with his team.

Playing with a handicap of 11, Vernon was set for a good day of golf, and as his team progressed throughout the course they all celebrated and commiserated their results.

While Vernon didn’t ‘beat the pro’, one of his team mates did, earning himself another round of golf at The Grove in the future.

After the golf had officially ended, they all congregated for an auction, with all proceeds going to Children with Cancer UK.

The cause is no doubt particularly special for Vernon who has two children of his own, Phoebe, 17, and Amber, 12, with wife Tess Daly.

Earlier this year Tess revealed what it’s like parenting with Vernon, admitting they make their daughters ‘cringe’ with their loved-up displays.

Speaking to The Mirror about the parenting dynamic, Tess explained: ‘I’m Mum Cabs, that’s my main role in life. Vernon is brilliant with the girls.

‘He’s very into getting them outdoors, he’ll take them on bike rides or go up into the woods and make a rope swing. He’s a really fun dad. It works well between us.

Asked about Vernon recently branding her the ‘boss of the house,’ Tess laughed and teased: ‘Well, would the boss ever admit that? Well, I guess I run the children’s schedules and the meals. So am I the boss? Probably!’

The presenter also admitted they make their kids ‘cringe,’ confessing: ‘If he kisses me in the kitchen, the 12 year old goes “Urgh gross!” She’s at that point but she’s smiling behind the horror.’

Tess and Vernon – who renewed their wedding vows six years ago – began dating shortly after meeting on T4 in 2001.
