Other Facebook users also took to the comments to express their amusement at the appeal.

A second Mike Smith even commented on the post, saying: ‘Not me (or one of my relatives) – I’m a tad older that 37, not 6” tall and those who know me would maybe agree I am not quite as big a build!’

Graham Southsea said: ‘I was today years old when I learnt I was an athlete’.

Mark Brooks said: ‘Last time I saw him he was winning the world darts championship’.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said Smith has links to the surrounding areas of Eastleigh, Petersfield and Bishopstoke.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: ‘Our advice to Michael is to hand himself in at the earliest opportunity.

‘We know a lot of people have seen our wanted appeal post on Facebook and we have had great support from the public so far.

‘Our officers are following up lines of enquiry to find him and we would encourage people to continue sharing the post so we can make sure Michael is returned to prison for the crimes he has committed.

‘We would like to remind the public that harbouring a wanted individual is a crime which could lead to being arrested.’

Anyone who knows Smith or his location is advised to quote the reference 44220429104 and call 101, report the information via the police website or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 080055111.
