A new purifying device designed to remove chemicals from wine that cause headaches has just hit the market.
The Üllo Wine Purifier, priced at $118, is a device that functions much like a water filter, with the exception it removes sulfites (artificial preservatives) and sediment in wine.
The product, available on Amazon, is designed to be placed on top of a wine glass, where an internal filter selectively ‘captures’ up to 80 per cent of sulfites.
And because the device has been engineered to the highest standards, it doesn’t disturb other delicate chemical compounds or alter the taste.
If you love a glass of wine but find yourself struggling with reactions including headaches, itching and wheezing, you may be suffering a sulfite sensitivity
The Üllo Wine Purifier, available from Amazon, works by selectively ‘capturing’ up to 80 per cent of sulfites
What types of wines are sulfites more commonly found in?
* Sulfites are generally found at higher levels in cask wine than bottled wine, and are at much higher concentrations in white wine than red wine, which is preserved by natural tannins.
Wine poured through the Üllo is treated through disposable filters called Sulfite Capture Filters.
‘Unlike traditional filters that work like a net, Selective Sulfite Capture™ filters work like a magnet, pulling sulfites from wine and leaving everything else,’ reads product information on the Üllo site.
The hardworking filters can only be used once, which means as a fresh bottle is opened, it will need to be replaced.
The creation of this device will no doubt comes as good news to those who suffer a reaction to the presence of sulfites.
The stylish gadget, priced at $118, works by being placed above a wine glass where it functions in a similar manner to a water filer
According to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, those intolerant or sensitive to sulfites can experience allergy-like reactions (intolerances), with symptoms such as wheezing in people with asthma, hay fever, and hives.
The device currently holds a four-star rating out of five on Amazon with those who’ve tried the filter saying has helped with headaches and hangovers.

‘First evening put a whole bottle of Ruby Port through the filter. Drank a glass of Port after dinner. Even before going to bed my nose did not stuff up! No headache in the morning. Great product,’ said one reviewer.
Another said: ‘This truly works and eliminates enough sulfites that I don’t have skin rashes, swelling or painful bumps on my legs like I would have without using this filter.’
‘Awesome product!’ A third added. ‘Huge difference in taste between before and after using Ullo to filter your wine. No hangover the next day either.’
Others who had tried the product said while they believed it to be effective at filtering wine, the process was a little time-consuming.
‘Works great, but takes 1-2 min to pour a glass of wine. You have to pour a little then wait for it to filter then repeat until you have the desired amount in your glass, otherwise works great.’
