Woman and 17-year-old boy are killed in a horror highway smash when they collide with a road train

A woman and teenage boy have died in a horror highway smash after their car collided with a road train.

The pair were travelling in a ute along the Barkly Highway, 26km west of Cloncurry, Queensland, when the two vehicles crashed about 6.35am on Monday.    

The 44-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy died at the scene.

The driver of the road train was airlifted to the Mount Isa Base Hospital in a stable condition for treatment of his injuries.

The accident closed the highway for several hours throughout the morning but it has since reopened. 

A photo of the scene shows emergency services working to clear the accident. 

Travellers held up in traffic could be seen congregating outside of their vehicles. 

The forensic crash unit is investigating.
