A woman has revealed how her first holiday with a new boyfriend went from romantic to nightmarish after a drunken row sent her straight to jail.
British chip shop worker Donna Miles was in New York with her boyfriend of a few months, to attend a wedding and meet his family, when a lover’s quarrel led to her arrest in 2016.
Donna was sent to jail and could have faced a five-year sentence for breaking her boyfriend’s phone and resisting arrest.
After a tense night where she was left fearing the worst, Donna was released with a $425 fine.
She recounts her story in tonight’s episode of 5Star’s Young, Dumb and Banged Up in the Sun, where she reveals that the incident didn’t cause too much damage to the blossoming relationship because the pair are now set to get married.
Chip shop worker Donna Miles, from the UK, was on a holiday in New York in 2016 with her boyfriend of a few months, when a drunken row led to her arrest
Donna and her boyfriend had been together for a few months when they travelled to the US to attend his best-friend’s wedding.
The couple travelled to his hometown of Connecticut prior to the wedding in upstate New York so that she could be introduced to his relatives.
‘He said he loved me that much that he wanted me to meet all his family,’ she said.
‘I was hoping to make a good impression with all his friends cause I was hoping they would welcome me.’
While the their time abroad started off very well, the couple soon got into an argument during the rehearsal dinner.
Donna said she turned to alcohol to calm her nerves, and drank vodka-lemonades and then Sambuca shots.
Donna, pictured, said she turned to alcohol for courage when meeting her new boyfriend’s friends and family, but ended up in a drunken row
After a few drinks the couple started bickering, and her boyfriend told Donna he loved her less than his ex-partner, which pushed her to leave the dinner.
Things escalated when the couple got into the room of their fancy hotel screaming, and someone notified the police.
Donna, who had broken her boyfriend’s phone during the row, was arrested for the damage.
‘At this point I was very intoxicated, I was a little it wobbly on my feet,’ Donna explained.
Because she was drunk, Donna didn’t quite grasp the gravity of the situation, and while her boyfriend tried to intervene, officers arrested her and took her away.
‘I was sat at the back of that police car, thinking “what the hell have I done,” she recalled.
‘I was really upset, I didn’t want to be there, didn’t want to be arrested, it was just over something really silly and really small.
Donna revealed she then made matters worse for herself by trying to escape the police car.
Donna explained she was upset and disorientated and resisted arrest, going as far as to run away from the police car, before getting tackled by an officer
‘I was like “oh my god, I can’t be arrested on her first holiday as a couple,” Donna said.
She managed to wiggle her way out of the police car, but was immediately tackled to the floor by a police officer, and after more struggling, she was locked up to await her hearing.
Donna was then charged for damaging her boyfriend’s phone and resisting her arrest, and needed to pay $2,100 bail to be released.
Having broken the phone of the only person she knew in the US, Donna had no one to turn to and eventually called her boss back in the UK.
‘He was like: “It’s a lot of money,” and he didn’t want to pay it,’ she said.
Donna said she and her boyfriend were still together after the ordeal, and were now engaged to be married
‘I was crying on the phone and begging my boss to pay,’ she added, ‘I was very scared to stay in the cell for two days.’
Eventually, the man agreed to pay the bail and Donna was free to go.
She was no longer invited to the wedding, however, after the fight and her arrest.
Donna explained she thought her relationship would end there, but that she and her boyfriend ‘sorted it all out when she came back to the hotel.
She had to attend court again to hear her sentence, and feared she could be jailed for up to five years.
But, because the judge was in a good mood – ‘his team had beaten England,’ Donna said – he found her guilty of third degree misdemeanor.
Instead of jail time, Donna had to pay a $425 – a fine which is still outstanding, three years after the incident.
However, her boyfriend has stuck by her throughout the ordeal and the couple are now set to get married.
