A woman was last month raped while she slept in a Paris hospital by another patient who was supposed to have been deported, her lawyer claims.

The victim was assaulted during the night of October 27-28 at the Cochin hospital in Paris. A nurse found the woman, who was in emergency care for brain trauma at the time of the assault, being attacked in her cubicle at 4am.

After the attack, the suspect fled but was arrested an hour later thanks to the description provided by the nurse and victim.

French media said the suspect was carrying the victim’s bank card. The 22-year-old suspect, who is already known to the police, has been arrested and charged with rape.

He was using multiple identities and is the subject of two expulsion orders to leave France under two different names. His nationality has not been disclosed.

Laura Abecassis, the victim’s lawyer, said that she has also filed a complaint over the danger posed to her life.

The lawyer added: ‘It’s a double trauma for my client – the rape itself and the circumstances.

‘She wants … to understand how these extremely serious acts could have happened like that in a public institution.’

Prosecutors could seek an investigation into the circumstances in which the assault took place due to the woman’s complaint.

The Paris hospital service confirmed that a patient had suffered an assault on the night of October 27-28 but would not comment on the ongoing investigation.
