A woman has detailed her horrific experience of purchasing a flipped home that will completely change the way you look at those picture-perfect HGTV-style house renovations.

Kaitlin Mattes, 38, from Massachusetts, and her family got more than they bargained for when they were forced to move from New York to Cape Cod during the recent housing market crisis, having only seen their new home virtually.

The family-of-five purchased a flipped home – which is when a buyer purchases a property and renovates it to put it back on the market once again.

But while the images of the home promised a picturesque and elegantly-restored property – after the family got settled, they soon realized the reality was a far cry from the glossy photos they’d been shown.

The mom has gone viral after documenting her ‘horrible home’ through a seven-part series on her TikTok by showing her over 25,000 followers every mistake in their home, leaving viewers up in arms over the disastrous conditions she found herself in.

While sharing the areas of her home where she found serious issues – from water-damaged bathrooms to uneven tiles – Kaitlin has managed to maintain a sense of humor, earning high praise from viewers with her tongue-in-cheek insults aimed at her home renovators, whom she refers to as ‘potato chips, turnips, and hazelnuts’.

In one video, she explains that one of the toe kicks in her kitchen – a piece of wood placed under a cabinet – fell right off due to the lack of grout, before adding that the flippers acted as if grout didn’t exist and seemingly decided not to use it anywhere.

Kaitlin also shows off herself sweeping the excess pieces of her tile flooring which she notes is ‘coming up’ because the flippers ‘forced’ the tile on an ‘uneven floor.’

In another video she shows a wall that has rectangular trimming up until the end, where the flippers decided to randomly put two squares, causing the mom-of-five to question how they didn’t ‘measure’ beforehand.

She also shows the squared stone pathway that leads up to her front door, but the flippers ‘missed a few’ and she notes they are ‘uneven,’ before adding that they will ‘definitely be coming up.’

Another video sees Kaitlin discussing the ‘butt holes’ the flippers left in her stairs, which her kids have decided to fill with their toys and other random goodies.

‘Of course my skinny worm children found where they forgot banisters. Lovely,’ she says.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, she revealed that the family did indeed have an inspection prior to purchase, however, their house purchasing experience saw them faced with many challenges.

She explained that there was ‘no inventory and interest rates skyrocketed,’ before adding that they had to fork over ‘triple’ the amount they paid in New York.

And although she understood that the house had been flipped and was well over the price it should have been listed for, Kaitlin explained they were left with no other choices as her husband ‘already left NY and was living in MA working full time’ while she stayed in NY with their three children, which made things even more difficult for them.

She added that whatever inspection found wouldn’t be able to be used in pricing negotiations, before adding that the ‘structural and electrical’ areas seemed ‘fine’ so they went ahead and moved in, having only seen it virtually.

And while she was expecting to walk into a house filled with surprises, she noted she wasn’t expecting a ‘dumpster of surprises,’ she told BuzzFeed.

The mom-of-five began using social media as an outlet to vent about her frustrations, but never imagined it would reach such a large audience.

She added: ‘I’m lucky with the fact that I can fix these issues but what about those that aren’t versed in home renovations?

‘Who has the money these days to fix what should have been done properly in the first place, especially when families are now forced to pay top dollar for homes.’

Despite all the seemingly never-ending issues, Kaitlin said she was ‘determined’ to make the house work for her and her family and will be fixing the issues in order to give her kids a stable home.
